Greek Orthodox Easter, celebrated this year on Sunday, April 12th, is the most important religious celebration in Greece. Rich in history and tradition, it is a deeply meaningful time filled with faith, community, and centuries-old customs that remain beautifully alive today.
Throughout Holy Week, the island is immersed in unique traditions:
Processions & Flowers: Church icons are carried through village streets covered in flowers, creating a truly fragrant and atmospheric experience.
Midnight Resurrection: On Saturday night, candlelight fills the churches as locals and visitors gather to celebrate the Resurrection with the words “Christos Anesti” (Christ is Risen), often accompanied by fireworks lighting up the sky.
Easter Sunday Feast: A joyful celebration with traditional lamb roasted on the spit, shared among family and friends in homes and seaside tavernas.
